The team spirit and enthusiasm for all five games was tremendous. After losing a tough game in the last inning to a spirited Lake Elsinore team Saturday evening, the team bounced back and played its best softball game of the year beating Rancho Bernardo 10-0. The team excelled in all aspects of the game (fielding, hitting and pitching). The next game was against the #1 seeded Vista team that had beaten us 10 - 1 in the Oceanside Riptide Tournament. This game was a real battle from the first pitch to the last. Vista went ahead when the first batter hit a homerun, but our great pitching and defense held them scoreless after that. A highlight of the game included throwing out 6 runners tying to steal second base. The offense hung in there to score two runs, just enough to beat an excellent Vista team. The championship game was another exiting game in which LaCosta came back from a 6-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning. We played great in the final innings to hold on to an 8-4 victory. Every player contributed to help win this tournament and this Carlsbad 14U team does Whatever It Takes to get the job done.Coach Eddie DIVISION 2 (12U) GIRLS MAKE IT TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME…TAKE RUNNER UP! The 12U team had a great weekend going 3-2 against some very good teams. In the second pool play game Kamalii Peneku threw a PERFECT GAME! No walks, no hits, no errors, no base runners. She retired all 18 batters she faced. For our first tournament the girls played great. Everyone contributed in some way to our success. We used two last inning rallies to beat Valley Center and LaCosta to advance to the finals. To finish 2nd in our first tournament is very rewarding for everyone. Great job Girls! Coach Hugh DIVISION 1 (10U GIRLS PLAY IN THE SEMIFINALS! The Carlsbad 10U Purple Thunder bats made some noise at the San Marcos tournament. After losing a close game 3-2 Friday night vs. Rancho Bernardo we came back to win our next 3 games by scores of 10-0 vs. San Marcos Silver, 10-1 vs. Valley Center, and 9-3 vs. San Marcos Gold. We stuck with our philosophy of good pitching, tight defense and aggressive base running and it really paid off. We ran into a very good Vista team on Sunday in the semi-finals and went down 4-1. Overall, the coaches were delighted with the team’s play and we are looking forward to the next tournament. Coach Jeff ROOKIES WIN FIRST GAME OF TOURNAMENT! The rookies (8U) pulled out an impressive win at the San Marcos tournament. The girls showed great spirit and gave exceptional effort in all facets of the game. Way to go Carlsbad Rookies!!! ****Rancho Cucamonga Tournament Results**** It started off a bit muggy and overcast in Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday, but then kept getting hotter, and hotter, and hotter! By Sunday afternoon it was a real scorcher! One of the highlights of the road trip was the annual Saturday night pool party. It was a pretty fun sight seeing 40+ girls between the ages of 8 and 12 (the 14U girls had a Sat. night game) frolicking around the pool having fun and doing cannonballs. There was happiness and joy in the air, the essence of the childhood spirit at play…and then…things…got…ugly… I’ve never been witness a mob mentality until Saturday night around that hotel pool. The sight of 40 girls clustering around each coach, completely surrounding them and cutting off all avenues of escape was truly a frightening sight. "Coach Hugh, Coach Hugh, Coach Hugh!" echoed from 40 tiny voices, off the walls and balconies of the surrounding buildings. Then, those tiny hands would reach out and the mob of girls systematically surrounded and herded Coach Hugh (Kollar) to poolside and sent him (fully clothed) into the frigid arctic (it sure felt frigid when it was my turn) waters. One by one, each coach was surrounded (to the chants of their name) and led, sometimes kicking and screaming, into the water. Fortunately for me, I had time to take off my shoes, socks, watch and cell. As all the coaches stood wet and dripping, the mob began to go after CSA board members (Cristi, Cristi, Cristi!!!) and parents. It was sheer luck that some parents were able to escape with their pride and their dryness intact. Much of this was caught on Michelle’s digital camera (before she reluctantly handed it over to me and accepted her inevitable fate) so the web site should eventually feature the gruesome photo diary. Ahhh, the innocence of children at play…J Rookies (8U) The Rookies lost their first game against a tough Montclair team. The second pool play game against Moreno Valley was a hard game as well. The girls held their own, only giving up 5 runs in the loss. In Sunday’s bracket play the Rookies pulled out a huge 5-2 win over Yucaipa. Our star hitter of the game was Khyla Freeman with a triple that knocked in 3 runs. Entering the quarterfinals Carlsbad fell to a tough Fontana team 4-3. Overall, it was a great tournament. Michelle Pahl Division I (10U) The 10U All-Stars had another good showing in the Rancho Cucamonga tournament, making it to the Quarterfinals. We opened the tournament with an impressive 10-1 win vs. the Rancho Cucamonga Gold team but then fell to a very strong Corona team. On Sunday, we took care of Oceanside 13-2 and had a very competitive game, but coming out on the short end 3-2 to a pesky, defense-minded Yucaipa team. Overall, the girls gave a great effort, highlighted by Shelly Proctor’s excellent 6 scoreless innings of pitching against Yucaipa in the blazing heat and humidity. Way to go Shelly! The coaching staff is very proud of our team and we are looking to make some NOISE at Seabreeze! Coach Jeff Division II (12U) Division II had another great showing this past weekend in Rancho Cucamonga. The girls won 2 and lost 2, finishing up in the quarterfinals and losing to a Montclair team that was very, very good. Every girl contributed over the weekend and that’s always a great sign of a great team. Our defense was solid again…in our last game we left the bases loaded once and left girls on 2nd and 3rd once. If we could have converted in those two innings we would have had a totally different outcome. The coaches and parents are very proud of the girls and their development as players and as a team. The out-of-town tournament is always a great way to build camaraderie and this weekend was no different. We’re looking forward to Seabreeze! Coach Hugh Division III (14U) Division III played well in the Rancho Cucamonga tournament even though our record was 1-3. The defense and pitching were excellent, allowing only 7 runs in three games. Our offense was not as good as the two previous tournaments but most of that can be attributed to the excellent teams we faced in Rancho Cucamonga. The thing that I am most proud of is the way this team never gives up. All the games are exciting and 6 of 13 games have been decided in the last at-bat.
